Mission of an Evangelist
“You are gathered in Amsterdam from over 200 countries. Some of you have traveled thousands of miles and at great sacrifice. Why are you all in that beautiful city? What is the purpose of all the planning, the work, the travel, the price that we have paid?
“We have come together,” said Billy Graham, “to discover how the evangelical Church worldwide can further the Kingdom of God by the proclamation of the Gospel. To this end we will commit ourselves during the entire Conference.”
Billy Graham had convened this “Conference of Preaching Evangelists,” and he told the participants that he hoped they would focus on the New Testament ideals of Gospel preaching, based on the Bible and carried out in the power of the Holy Spirit.
The veteran evangelist knew, as did the 11,000-plus international participants, that while the content of the Gospel message remains the same, the audience has changed, and we must adapt our evangelistic presentations so that we can effectively reach adults, youth and children of the new century.
The Amsterdam 2000 Conference of Preaching Evangelists offered 22 plenary sessions which were attended by all the participants, eight seminars in different Conference languages (there were 29 official languages), and over 220 work- shops in various languages. All the plenary messages, with other plenary pro- gram elements, all the seminar topics, and a limited selection of workshops are included in this Compendium.
As we offer this Compendium of Amsterdam 2000 to the public, our hope and prayer is that thousands who could not attend the Conference will be encouraged and strengthened in their preaching of the Gospel by what they read here.
